Emission Reduction Devices
Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) – A DOC is a porous ceramic
honeycomb-like structure containing a special catalyst that breaks down
pollutants in the exhaust stream. The catalyst structure is placed in a
muffler and is installed as a simple muffler replacement. A DOC can cost
between $1,000 - $2,000. DOCs are maintenance free and require no cleaning
routines because soot does not build up in the catalyst.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
– A DPF is a porous ceramic honeycomb-like structure
containing a special catalyst coating that breaks down pollutants in the
exhaust stream. The catalyst structure is placed in a muffler and is
installed as a simple muffler replacement. However, there are significant
differences between a DPF and DOC.
A DOC is a "flow-through"
catalyst so exhaust emissions are catalyzed as the exhaust stream passes
through the catalyst. A DPF catalyst requires the exhaust stream to pass
through the walls of the honeycomb-like structure before exiting the
catalyst. The benefits of a DPF are much higher emissions reductions. The
downside of a DPF is that soot accumulates in the catalyst and requires
periodic removal and cleaning. DPFs require the use of ultra-low-sulfur
diesel fuel (15 parts per million sulfur). DPFs also have a higher cost of
between $$6,000 - $10,000.

Crankcase Filtration System – Medium- and heavy-duty turbo
charged diesel engines have open crankcase vents. The open vent prevents
"blow-by" contaminants from fouling turbochargers and aftercooler
components if unfiltered. A crankcase filtration system closes the open
vent, filters the "blow-by" engine oil, and returns the oil to the oil
pan. The filtration system reduces engine oil consumption, underhood
odor/fumes, and harmful emissions to the environment.
