Smog Season Begins
The Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services launched its annual Smog Season on April 1. Smog Season, which runs through October 31, monitors the concentration of ground-level ozone and particulate matter (PM) in the four-county region.

Celebrating Earth Day 2011
Cincinnati will be celebrating the 41st Earth Day this year at Sawyer Point on Saturday, April 16 from noon–5:30 p.m. Admission is free, and expect a plethora of environmental exhibitors and activities.

Pollen and Mold Season Returns
Over 50 million Americans suffer from allergies, many of which are caused by pollen and mold. The Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services’ Monitoring and Analysis staff provides daily updates on pollen and mold counts so sensitive residents can be prepared for days with especially high levels of these airborne pollutants.

Air Quality Awareness Week
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service urge Americans to "Be Air Aware" during Air Quality Awareness Week, May 2–6, 2011.

Radiation Levels No Concern for Tri-State
While the radiation risks unfold in the aftermath of the natural and nuclear disasters in Japan, many area residents are left wondering if the effects from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant will have an impact on the Tri-State.

National Ambient Air Quality Standards Update
The Clean Air Act, which was last amended in 1990, requires EPA to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards for wide-spread pollutants from numerous and diverse sources considered harmful to public health and the environment. The Clean Air Act requires periodic review of the science upon which the standards are based and the standards themselves.

As the weather warms, windows are opened and more time is spent outdoors. The spring time also ushers in air quality complaints, and the Permits and Enforcement section of the Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services is prepared to address your air quality concerns.

  Geiger Counter :
also called a Geiger-Müller counter, is a type of particle detector that measures ionizing radiation and detects the emission of nuclear radiation, specifically, alpha particles, beta particles or gamma rays.
