Pollution Prevention is on Tap this Summer

Four local businesses are taking advantage of the Southwest Ohio Pollution Prevention Internship Program this summer. Since 2007, the solid waste districts in Hamilton County and Butler County have teamed with TechSolve, Inc., and various host companies to address important pollution prevention (P2) and energy efficiency projects using college interns specially trained to address these issues. In 2013, the Montgomery County Solid Waste District joined the program. This summer, interns are working for St. Bernard Soap Company and TriHealth in Hamilton County, ThyssenKrupp Bilstein in Butler County, and Aptalis Pharma in Montgomery County. The projects are designed by the host companies and focus on waste reduction, process improvement, recycling, employee engagement, and energy efficiency. Ultimately, though, all the projects are intended to result in cost savings for the companies.

In 2012, participating host companies, which include Da-Lite Screen Company, Patheon, Inc., Valeo, and Tedia Company, realized a combined savings of more than $190,000 from P2 intern projects.

If your company has hard-to-get-to but important projects related to waste reduction and recycling, water conservation, or energy efficiency, the P2 internship program may be just what you need. Contact your county’s P2 Program Coordinator to learn more about the program and how to apply to become a host company.
