Three Communities Recognized for Outstanding Recycling Programs
On America Recycles Day in November 2008, the District recognized three Hamilton County communities at our annual Recycling Awards Luncheon. This year the awards went to the City of Wyoming, the City of Blue Ash, and the City of Harrison.
Wyoming boasts knockout program
The City of Wyoming received the Best Community Recycler Award for
achieving the highest recycling rate in a community with less than
10,000 residents. Wyoming owns the distinction of having the
highest recycling rate of any community in Hamilton County in
2007, by diverting 25.02% of their waste stream. Wyoming works
hard to maintain the rate by regularly promoting recycling in
their monthly newsletter and at community events. They attribute
their high participation to the fact that residents do not pay an
extra fee for curbside recycling service. The recycling program
also has strong support from City Council and committed residents
who enthusiastically advocate for the program. Check out Wyoming’s
website devoted exclusively to recycling at

Blue Ash flexes drop-off muscle
The City of Blue Ash received the Best Community Recycler Award in a community with more than 10,000 residents. Blue Ash achieved a 23.43% recycling rate in 2007. Even though Blue Ash residents receive curbside recycling service at no extra cost in single-family homes, more than half of the residential recycling comes from their well-established drop-off program. Blue Ash offers four conveniently located drop-offs for residents in apartments and for residents with more recyclables than their bin can hold. Blue Ash promotes recycling in their community newsletter and website.
Harrison makes impressive comeback
Last but not least, the City of Harrison received the award for the Most Improved Recycling Program. In 2007, Harrison increased recycling by over 83 tons, a 41.07% increase over 2006! Harrison partnered with the District to boost recycling in the community through direct mail to all residents, articles in local newsletters, outreach to schools, and recycling at events. City workers also ask every new resident signing up for water service if they would like a recycling bin.
Congratulations to all our award winners and keep up the good work!
