More Hamilton County Businesses are Recycling at Work
A 2003 study revealed that almost half (44%) of the waste entering the landfill in Hamilton County is paper. With over a dozen local paper recyclers craving paper, the District decided to reduce this considerable waste by targeting one of the largest sources of paper waste- the office.
Since 2006, the District has offered Recycling at Work assistance to local businesses. Response to the program has been fantastic! Participating businesses blossomed from 13 in 2006 to 67 during 2008. To date, more than 41,000 employees gained access to recycling in their workplace due to the program. In June, the District was thrilled to learn that the National Association of Counties (NACo) recognized the Recycling at Work program with a NACo Achievement award for 2009!
The Recycling at Work program assists both local businesses and property managers initiate recycling in their offices. The program uses a three-pronged approach:
Offering technical assistance
Providing indoor collection containers
Creating educational materials
At the first meeting with an office, District staff helps design a custom collection process and explains the options of private sector paper recyclers in the area. The District provides all the supplies necessary for internal collection including desk-side recycling boxes and larger containers for bottles and cans. Finally, to increase employee involvement, staff creates flyers, posters, and stickers explaining how to recycle and encouraging employees to participate.
We would love to help the businesses in your community start recycling. Please refer any Hamilton County business to (513) 946-7734 or our website. We assist government offices in starting recycling too!
