Solid Waste District Assists with Storm Clean Up
On September 14th, southwest Ohio was hit with the remnants of Hurricane Ike which resulted in severely damaging winds. The storm caused widespread damage throughout Hamilton County, generating significant amounts of organic material. Immediately following the storm, the District’s Policy Committee authorized the District to assist communities and residents in managing the storm debris.
Residential Assistance
Each year, the District contractually operates three yardwaste drop-off sites in Anderson Township, Green Township, and Colerain Township. Typically, the sites are open for several hours on the weekends. To assist in the clean up, the District opened all three sites for extended hours and two of the three sites were open during the week. The District estimates that the sites collected over 800 tons of debris as a result of the storm.
The District also supplied much needed information to the media to inform residents on options to properly dispose of storm debris. After contacting all Hamilton County communities to develop a comprehensive list of how each community was collecting storm debris, the District provided the information to the media.
Community Assistance
After meeting with community representatives to determine their needs, the District contracted for tub grinding services and wood chip removal. The District continues to assist
several communities with these services.
