FALL 2009 SPENCER'S HIGHLIGHTS

2009-2010 School Waste Reduction Grants Awarded

Symmes Elementary School will be composting food waste from the cafeteria utilizing a Wigwam vermicomposting container. During the first year of the program, only 3rd and 4th grade students will be feeding their fruit and vegetable waste to the Wigwam, but eventually, the program will encompass the entire school. The hands-on educational program will teach the importance of reducing, reusing, recycling, and how to be good stewards of the environment. As a result of this effort, the school expects to divert 30-35 pounds of waste per day from the landfill, which will also help the school cut its waste management fees. The total amount awarded was $1,097.00. Thank you to parent volunteer Elizabeth Bruggeman, and the school Green Team for coordinating this project.
