School Recycling Workshops

The District will provide your school staff with an introductory workshop on recycling at home and at school. The workshop will focus on what can be recycled locally, and how to implement a successful and sustainable school recycling program. The workshop will also focus on local resources, and available curriculums that will enhance your teaching of environmental science and solid waste management subject matter.

Master
Composter Training
Date: Wednesdays, September 9, 16 and 23, 2009
(Attendance at all three sessions is mandatory.)
Time: 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Who: Hamilton County Residents
Cost: FREE
The Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati and the District have
partnered to provide you with three weeks of intensive training that
teaches every aspect of composting. Learn all there is to know
about backyard composting. Attendees will each build and take home
a wire compost bin, and have the option to make a vermicomposting
system for a nominal fee. Fifteen hours of volunteer service are
required to complete the course; students have one year from the
last class to complete their hours.

Ultimate Educator Expo

This is a fun, free evening for
educators to learn about the resources provided by the Greater Cincinnati Environmental Educators (GCEE). GCEE member organizations provide programming to both formal (K-12) and non-formal audiences (youth and adults). Since its inception, GCEE has served dozens of environmental education professionals, hundreds of classroom educators and thousands of Greater Cincinnati school children by providing resource fairs, education workshops, classroom programs and field trips. Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District Green Speaker Series – “Composting
at Home”

Worm Bin Workshop
Date: Thursday, October 22, 2009 Time: 4:30 p.m. –

Who: Hamilton County Teachers, grades K–12 Cost: $10
Registration deadline is October 15, 2009
Learn the essentials about vermicomposting. Using red worms and microorganisms to break down organic matter, students can bury their lunch scraps and harvest vermicompost in 3-4 months. Attendees will also learn a variety of experiments, activities and curricular tie-ins. All attendees will also receive a copy of Worms Eat My Garbage by Mary Applehof.

Solving the Puzzle: Connecting the Pieces of Environmental Education

K–12 Cost: $10, plus $6 for parking

Learn the connections between
recycling, water quality, air quality, energy conservation and
protecting animals. Enjoy a day filled with easy to reproduce
activities, lunch, door prizes, and a tour of the museum. Earn 0.5
CEU’s with the option of earning graduate credit from the University

Water and Waste Workshop

This combination workshop
is a powerhouse of relevant information, up-to-date environmental
lesson plans and previews of field trip opportunities for your

Vermicomposting at Home

Who: Hamilton County Residents Cost: $20 per household
Registration deadline is November 13, 2009
This is a hands-on, interactive workshop designed for households that wish to learn more about vermicomposting. During the session, each household will build a vermicomposting
