"Reducing Waste in Our Community" – Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District Sponsors Poster and YouTube Video Contests

2009 Earth Day Poster Contest
Who May Enter:
The contest is open to students in 1st through 8th grades, who are students in a school in Hamilton County, or residents of the county and home-schooled.

Contest Directions:
• 2009 theme: Reducing Waste in Our Community.
• Draw in color using crayons, markers, colored pencils or oil pastels on an 8.5 x 11
  sheet of white paper and mail flat.
• On the back of each entry, list the artist's name and grade level, the teacher and
  school name, and school address.
• Artwork must be suitable for reproduction.
• All copyrights must be observed. Avoid placing specific brand names or
  computer-generated art onto the posters.

Deadline:
Poster entries must be postmarked by April 1, 2009.

Each teacher or home-school parent, will conduct the contest for his/her classroom. In the place of homeroom teachers, art teachers may conduct the contest for each class.

Each teacher is responsible for selecting one winning poster from his/her class.

Winners:
A winner and runner-up will be chosen from each grade. Their artwork will be framed and displayed at a location chosen by HCDOES. Both students will receive prizes. The winner will receive additional Earth Day prizes.

2009 YouTube Video Contest
The following is only a summary of the YouTube Video Contest criteria. In order to ensure eligibility, you must read and follow the complete list of rules.

Who May Enter:
The contest is open to Hamilton County high school students, grades 9 through 12 and ages 13 years and older.

Contest Directions:
• Video MUST contain the phrase "Reducing Waste in Our Community."
• Video must be uploaded to YouTube at www.youtube.com.
• Videos should address the issue of reducing waste, the reasons why we should
  reduce waste, and ways that we can reduce waste.
• Acceptable source video includes sources that are not copyrighted. Participants
  take responsibility that all images and soundtracks are not copyrighted material.
  Do NOT use commercial copyrighted music or images.
• Videos may not contain obscene language or content, including but not limited to:
  nudity, profanity, or graphic violence. If you have any questions on what is
  acceptable, please e-mail Keebler Holley with the words "Video Contest" in subject
  line.
• Video must be no longer than two (2) minutes in total length. Entries exceeding two
  (2) minutes in length will not be accepted.

Deadline:
Videos must be received no later than October 19, 2009. The 10 finalists will be notified via e-mail and/or telephone by October 23, 2009. All winners will be contacted by November 4, 2009 and asked to attend a press event announcing the winners the week of November 14, 2009.

To enter, fill out the contest entry form and release form. In the event of a group submission, the group must designate one entrant with whom HCSWMD will contact for information. Only one entry form is needed for a group submission, however, all participants involved in the production of the video must sign release forms including the signature of a parent or legal guardian if participant is 18 years old or younger. Entry form and all supporting documentation (i.e., artist release for every person appearing in the video), as well as the URL for the video, should be sent electronically to Keebler Holley.

Entrants must upload their video using the upload form on the YouTube website www.youtube.com. The URL for the video must be provided on the entry form. Entry forms that do not include the URL for the video will not be accepted.

Winners:
The winning video will be featured on HCSWMD website and distributed to Hamilton County media outlets. This prize has no corresponding retail value. The specific prize details are at the sole discretion of HCSWMD. Winners will be contacted at the telephone number and/or e-mail address provided during registration.

Prizes will be awarded to the individual entrant. In the event of a group submission, the designated entrant who name appears on the entry form is responsible for dispersing prizes to any group participants. If the winning entrant is home-schooled, an affidavit verifying the entrant is indeed being home-schooled must be provided. Prizes are to be determined.
