VI. Policy
Items
A. Approval for District
Priority Grants
Under the Solid Waste Management
Plan Update, the District replaced the Reduction
Assistance Grant with a District Priority Grant
for communities and non-profit organizations. With
this revised grant program, the Policy Committee
identifies three key solid waste management issues
eligible for District Priority Grant funding.
Potential grantees submit grant applications that
address these key issues.
At the May 2009 Policy
Committee meeting, the members approved the
following priorities for the 2010 grant cycle:
new recycling drop-offs, recycling in public
spaces, and organics.
District staff has
included, as
Attachment C, recommendations
relating to applications for District Priority
Grant funding. Although all grant recommendations
are included in
Attachment C, the Policy Committee
is only required to vote on grant requests that
are greater than $15,000.
Staff
Recommendation: District staff
recommends that the Policy Committee approve the
grant award recommendations for forwarding to the
Board of County Commissioners.
B. Television
Recycling Event
In response to the switch to
all digital broadcast, the District conducted a
television recycling program in conjunction with its
computer recycling program. Through this program,
residents could drop-off televisions for a charge of $10
or $20, depending on the size of the television (no
charge for Sony, Zenith, Goldstar, and LG).
From May 1 – September 30th,
a total of 954 televisions were collected. While there
is no cost to the District for this program, staff is
not recommending that the program continue in 2010 for
the following reasons:
1. The
intent of the program was to provide an outlet for
televisions in response to the switch to digital
broadcasting.
2. There
are existing outlets for televisions including: Best Buy
($10/TV, must be less than 32”), 2trg ($30/TV or free if
Sony, Zenith, LG, Goldstar), USA Lamp & Ballast
($20/TV).
Staff
Recommendation: District staff recommends
discontinuing the television recycling event.
