24 million students in America ride to and from school everyday on a fleet of nearly 600,000 school buses. The fuel of choice for many of these buses is diesel fuel, which produces fumes that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ruled as harmful. The U.S. EPA has identified 21 chemicals in bus and truck exhaust that are known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects. Knowing that the fumes are a serious problem, we should look at ways to cut down on producing them.
