Ambient Air Quality
Monitoring Sites

The Air Quality Monitoring Network is operated by the Department’s Monitoring & Analysis Section. The monitoring station locations are selected with USEPA and OEPA guidance and, in general, are established near areas of high pollution, pollutant sources, or maximum expected concentrations.

Continuous monitors for ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides produce hourly readings that are accessed by the Department’s central computer. Intermittent instruments collect particulate samples on a daily, every third day or every six day cycle. Particulate samples are then brought to the Department’s laboratory for analysis. One continuous PM2.5 particulate monitor is also available.

There are 42 continuous and intermittent monitors placed throughout Butler, Clermont, Hamilton, and Warren Counties. These instruments are used to monitor the following pollutants:

Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)*

Ozone (O3)*

Nitrogen Oxides (NOX)*

Carbon Monoxide (CO)*

Lead (Pb)

Total suspended particulates

Inhalable particulates (PM10)

Inhalable particulates (PM2.5)

* Indicates a pollutant measured using a continuous air monitor, as opposed to an intermittent air monitor.

The following map provides a closer look at the monitors located in Hamilton County. This map was created using CAGIS (Cincinnati Area Geographic Information System). Click on a monitoring site to view graphs of the pollutants monitored at each site. The graphs were compiled using data from HCDOES Annual Air Quality Reports. More information about the air quality data is available in the 2004 Air Quality Data Report.
