CFC Program

CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons, have been identified as one of the major causes of the "hole" in the stratospheric ozone layer, which shields the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. The Permits and Enforcement section assists the U.S. EPA in several voluntary activities to minimize the amount of mishandled CFCs. By inspecting businesses known to handle CFCs and responding to citizens’ complaints, the Permits & Enforcement section is able to uncover possible violations of refrigerant handling regulations.

During the summer of 1995, the U.S. EPA created program guidelines for inspecting CFC handling operations. The Permits & Enforcement section participated in the new inspection procedure and was recognized by the U.S. EPA for the increased quality of CFC inspections.
