December 2010

December 1  Hanukkah Begins
December 21  First Day of Winter
December 25  Christmas Day
December 26  Kwanzaa Begins

What a month of celebrations!
While you spend the holidays enjoying the company of family and friends, be sure to invite green practices into the mix! There are many ways to participate in all of the festive aspects of your celebration, while still being conscientious of energy use, waste reduction and resource conservation. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• Decorating: decorate with LED lights. They use up to 33% less energy than incandescent
lights, last longer and run cooler.

• Trees: buy a live tree and plant it in your yard after the holidays; or buy a cut tree from a
properly managed, local tree farm and after the season ends, take it to a yardwaste recycling
  location to be mulched.

• Shopping: plan out your shopping trips. Try to get your shopping done at one location and in
one day, and be sure to take the shortest route. This reduces pollution, saves gas and saves
time. Don't forget to bring your reusable bags along!

• Gift Wrap: present your gifts in reusable bags, tied with a pretty bow; use fabric adorned with
a holiday pattern–you can iron it and use it again next year; or wrap gifts with newspaper–the
sports section for the Bengals fan, the business section for the financial guru, or the comics
  for your little one.
