Focus the Nation at the University of Cincinnati

With 1,100 colleges and  universities nationwide, Focus the Nation will be the largest teach-in ever held in American history. "A teach-in is a day when an entire school turns its attention to a single issue — when faculty, students and staff put aside business as usual, and focus the full weight of campus engagement on one topic." Focus the Nation will bring awareness to the problems of global warming and will address practical solutions from all angles for students to implement in their own lives and on-campus.

 Green Building Panel at the Joint Meeting of the Cincinnati Regional Chapter U.S. Green Building Council and IFMA

 Cincinnati Regional Chapter U.S. Green Building Council

Mark R. Shanahan from the Offices of the Governor of the State of Ohio, is the Governor’s Energy Adviser and the Executive Director of the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority. He will present an overview of the new Energy Policy now in Congress, with input on how it will impact the building and facility industry in Ohio while highlighting key changes from the previous Energy Policy of 2005.

This seminar will give participants the tools necessary to implement a "green cleaning" program at their facilities. Learn about the history and recent developments, the criteria necessary to evaluate products and programs, and useful tools for implementing "green cleaning" chemical programs in facilities. March 17  Cincinnati State’s Green Commitment Surges on St. Patrick’s Day

Cincinnati State will announce its commitment to making campus more environmentally friendly at the Surge Green Challenge Kick-Off on the greenest day of the year, St. Patrick’s Day.

John Henderson, interim president of Cincinnati State, will sign the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment and announce the College’s involvement in the Hamilton County Go Green Challenge. Cincinnati State has named its on-campus initiative Surge Green. Brewster Rhoads, the Governor’s regional director for Southwest Ohio, will be on hand to give a presentation on efforts to improve the environment happening throughout Ohio.

In addition to the presentations, event attendees can participate in games like Suma Wrestling (renewable energy vs. fossil fuels) and an environmental quiz game. The event also will feature educational exhibits, and attendees can have their fill of green cookies and punch and Irish music to celebrate the occasion. The public is welcome.

March 20  First Day of Spring
It's time for spring cleaning! Won't it feel good to get everything clean and organized, so you can relax and enjoy the warmer days coming up? Here are a few ideas to help you stay Green in the process:

-  use earth-friendly cleaners when you dust;

-  donate durable items you no longer want to charities and free stores;

-  take unwanted paint and motor oil, along with other Household Hazardous Waste, to an

   Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program*;

-  gather up those old computer parts and cell phones you have laying around the house and
   take them to a Computer Recycling Drop-Off Event*;

-  and when you prepare your yard for spring planting, keep yard waste out of the landfill by
   taking it to a Yardwaste Drop-Off Site*.


* Please note that the resource links above are provided for Hamilton County residents only. Household Hazardous Waste, computers (as well as electrical components listed on the website) and yard waste from businesses cannot be accepted at these events.
