Composting: Let it Rot
Grades Pre 1–4, 45
minutes
Cost to School (with
District subsidy): $40
(Retail cost: $80)
Low income school cost:
$10
A brief discussion of
exactly what makes great compost leads students into
role-playing the various components of a compost pile. They
must deduce what processes need to occur in order for them to
remain a viable “microhabitat.” Then, working in small groups,
they “dissect” compost, sorting, classifying, and charting
what they find. A rousing chorus of Dirt Made My Lunch
helps reinforce that composting is important for everyone.
