Volvo Car Corporation Announces Environmental Competition

Your school could win a $100 mini-grant from Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District to implement an environmental action plan!

Volvo Car Corporation and the Volvo Group is sponsoring the 2003 Volvo Adventure Environmental Award competition. Volvo is encouraging young people to devise and publish envrionmental action plans to help the environment. The student’s challenge is to design a practical action plan which will improve a school or community’s environment.

These plans fall under five headings:
•Biodiversity
•Consumption
•Water
•Transportation
•Pollution

The Volvo website provides simple activities to implement and sample proposals. The best teams from each country will be asked to join an international conference to present their ideas in Sweden and compete for a cash prize. The action plans will be published and presented to the United Nations Environment Program.
All Hamilton County Schools who enter the contest with an action plan related to the consumption heading (what can be done to make your purchases more environmentally friendly and involves the 3 R’s) is encouraged to contact Sue Magness at the Solid Waste Management District.

Each mini grant is up to $100 and will be awarded to a select number of schools to off-set the costs associated with the implementation of the action plan.
