Greater Cincinnati Environmental Educators Symposium
Creating an Environmental Community
June 11-12, 2002, 8:30 am - 5 pm,
Walnut Hills High School

The Environmental Symposium will be held at Walnut Hills High School on Tuesday, June 11 and Wednesday, June 12. This year's theme, "Creating an Environmental Community", will include sessions involving energy, water, land, animals, technology, and community service projects. The keynote speaker, Sr. Paula Gonzalez from the College of Mt. St. Joseph, is the founder of EarthConnection. Her speech is about "Living Lightly on the Earth." Throughout June 11th, separate workshops will be available for K-6 and 7-12 teachers. Day Two, June 12th, which is optional, provides the chance to take either a full day workshop, or go on a field trip. The registration fee for the symposium is $25 ($35 after May 1, 2002), and this fee will include the cost of materials, lunch and refreshments.
There may be additional charges for field trips on June 12th. Graduate credit is available from the University of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University at reduced tuition cost. The U.C. cost is $142 per credit hour, for one or two credits, and the cost for N.K.U. has not yet been confirmed. If you would like to register, or to find out more information, visit:

Make A Splash Workshop
July 30 - August 2, 2002, Greenacres Foundation, Cincinnati
Make A Splash 2002 Teacher Training Workshop will be at the Greenacres Foundation Old Church. The workshop is co-sponsored by Greenacres Foundation, Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District, Clermont County Soil and Water Conservation District and the University of Cincinnati's Center for Economic Education.
Participants will learn how to organize and conduct a water quality monitoring project on a local stream with their students and how to share their results with the community using a new online database. Each day of this comprehensive four-day workshop focuses on a separate topic: Water Quality and the Community; Watersheds and Mapping; Water Chemistry in the Field and Lab; Aquatic Habitats and Biomonitoring Techniques.
Cost for the workshop is $30 a day or $90 if you attend all 4 days. Graduate Credit will be awarded by the University of Cincinnati Center for Economic Education at a reduced price of $139 per credit hour. Attend any 2 days for 1 graduate credit hour, 3 days for 2 hours, or all 4 days for 3 credit hours. For more information, contact

Windows on Waste In-Service
You pick the date...we will come to your school!
The Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services will provide up-to-date background information and tested activities from the new curriculum, Windows on Waste (WOW), developed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. WOW is an interdisciplinary, environmental activity guidebook aligned with the Ohio Proficiency Test Learning Outcomes and the Ohio Competency-Based Educational Standards. It was written for grades 4 - 7, but can be easily modified. Each participant will receive a free copy of the curriculum ($35 value). The host/hostess will receive $100 to purchase supplies for any of the activities in the book. Contact

Environmental Education Council of Ohio (EECO) Creative Writing Institute for K-12 Teachers
June 17-21, 2002, Peninsula, Ohio
The Environmental Education Council of Ohio invites K-12 teachers to The Language of Nature: Using the Environment to Teach Imaginative Writing, a summer retreat and writing institute at Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center, Peninsula, Ohio.
The Language of Nature offers K-12 teachers the opportunity to: receive guidance from an expert faculty of writers and naturalists; develop creative writing skills amid peaceful surroundings; discover new, more innovative teaching methods; and learn, through first-hand experience, about the natural environment. Application fee: $200 covers Board and Lodging for all 5 days (limited to 40 participants).
