Waterfest 2002![]() Tuesday, March 26, 2002 Cincinnati Convention Center The Hamilton County Waterfest is an all day field study designed to help educate 5th grade students about water quality and other related natural resources. It involves 25 minute hands-on and minds-on presentations, exhibits, and water-related entertainment that are aligned with the state proficiency test learning objectives. Last year, over 2,400 students from 34 different schools attended and over 1,000 students were on a waiting list. Participating teachers will attend a pre-trip workshop on Thursday, January 17 2002, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., where they will learn how to prepare their students for the trip, what to expect during the event, and briefings on local water quality issues. Topics include: Metropolitan Sewer Districts study to correct the stormwater overflow system with a ‘Chunnel'; how Flour Fernald removes uranium from the aquifer in the northwest Hamilton County; the status of the Mill Creek Restoration Project; changes at the Greater Cincinnati Water Works; and more. Teachers will also receive pre-/post-activities, vocabulary, and resources to enhance the educational value of the program. This year, we can only accept 2,000 students, so register early! Registration fee is $20. Sliding scale student fee 25¢ to $2 per student. Free transportation available for those who can prove a financial need. Land LabMay 14th – 17th, 2002 Avon Woods Nature Center in North Avondale Space is limited for this trip, so don't miss out on this great educational tour! Land Lab is a day-long environmental field experience for 5th grade students. Experts teach students about forestry, wildlife, soils, recycling, and water. Students will walk through the woods to identify different tree species. They will screen compost and search for compost critters. Animal pelts will facilitate discussions about wildlife, and students will probe the soil to determine soil layers and compaction. All stations are geared to meet proficiency standards. Transportation is provided to and from your school to Avon Woods. The program cost is $1.00 per student, a $25.00 deposit is due on or before November 14, 2001. The deposit is used to secure transportation and is non-refundable. One teacher from each school is required to attend a pre-Land Lab workshop at Avon Woods Nature Center on Wednesday, November 14, 2001, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. This workshop will prepare teachers for the Land Lab experience and introduce presenters as well as presenting activities to prepare your students for Land Lab.
