County Announces New Professional Development Series

The series has been designed by Hamilton County’s Solid Waste Education Review Panel. The panel includes classroom teachers, administrators, curriculum coordinators, and non-formal environmental education specialists.

The series meets the Ohio Environmental Education Fund’s criteria for the highest level of professional development. Each series will consist of four workshops over an eight-month period with the same 25 teachers attending all the workshops.

Participants will visit a variety of local facilities which offer student field study opportunities and educational value. Following these experiences, teachers will select those that best meet their needs, break into small groups, and discuss how they can apply these new experiences and techniques to their classroom. Teachers are required to bring their curriculum and sequence calendar so they can integrate their experience into the curriculum.

At the final workshop, teachers will reflect on the program. Participants will discuss what worked, what didn’t, and when the material is most useful, considering the sequence requirements of their school and/or district. See professional development opportunities on page 4 for specific details about each series.

Support America Recycles Day On November 15th.

November 15th marks the fifth annual America Recycles Day, a day set aside to encourage all Americans to participate in recycling and to buy recycled-content products.

The Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District (the District) will be forming partnerships with local businesses, schools, environmental organizations and communities to help educate residents on the importance of buying recycled. By encouraging your students and other Hamilton County residents to take the pledge, they will become eligible to win a regional prize package.

To participate, complete a pledge card and return it to the District by November 5, 2001. Winners of regional prizes will be announced on February 21, 2002. If your school is interested, please call Sarah Brugger at (513) 946-7748. Pledging can be also done on-line.
