The Village of Indian Hill is one of the few remaining small communities in Hamilton County that manages its own curbside recycling program. As a component of the Public Works Department, their recycling division provides service to 2,300 homes and several schools located in the Village. In 2002 over 611 tons of materials were recovered amounting to 20% (excluding yard waste) of all the solid waste collected for the year. Since its inception, the recycling division has undergone several changes, downsizing from the original six members to its current level of three committed employees.

The purchase of new equipment and the cooperation of the recycling staff have allowed them to streamline their operation while at the same time providing the opportunity to actually expand our program. In October of 2002 a drop-off center for mixed paper and corrugated cardboard was established at the request of our residents. This service is in addition to the bi-weekly curbside collection already offered throughout the Village. Early estimates indicate an additional 30-50 tons of materials will be collected this year.

Last year, Public Works personnel removed over 6,220 cubic yards of brush, grass, leaves and Xmas trees at the request of homeowners. These materials are stockpiled, and then recycled into mulch 3-4 times each year. The mulch is offered to Village residents on a first come first served basis free of charge. In 2002, 1,455 cubic yards of mulch were delivered to 291 different residents. The remainder of the mulch was used in Village parks, for walking paths and various other projects.

The Public Works Department also works hard to provide information and encourage support of the recycling program. Over the last two years promotional items stating “Keep Indian Hill Beautiful Don’t Litter Recycle” have been distributed at various functions. These have been used in conjunction with their new full time litter collection program to protect the overall appearance and beauty of the Village. In addition, a waste and recycling brochure was distributed to all residents and articles appear regularly in the Village bulletin to enhance public awareness. Recycle truck

The Village of Indian Hill Public Works Department is grateful to have the support necessary to maintain this wonderful program. The enthusiasm in which this service is provided is a direct reflection of the overall attitude of our community. Through the hard work and dedication of just a few employees and the willingness of the people residing in Indian Hill, their recycling program is an unequivocal success!
