Cell Phone Recycling
According
to the environmental research group Inform, people living in the U.S. will
soon be getting rid of about 130 million mobile phones every year!
This is equivalent to about 65,000 tons of cell phones that currently are
being thrown away.
Cell phones contain arsenic, lead, and zinc. Although they
do not pose a threat to cell phone users, they are a danger when disposed in
landfills. So, how can you properly recycle your cell phone?
It’s easy to recycle your old cell phones! As easy as
dropping off your old phone to any Verizon, Sprint, or Franklin Covey
store or the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. These stores accept any hand-carried (not vehicle-installed)
cellular, battery, and charger. No matter the size, look, or condition, all
wireless phones are accepted. They even accept non-working phones! Cell
phones can also be dropped off at the
Women’s Crisis Center of
Northern Kentucky. Visit their site for more information.
All phones
received by these stores and organizations will be refurbished and
reprogrammed. Cell phones that are unable to be refurbished are recycled
according to Federal, State, and Local regulations.
The
Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens
will accept cell phones for recycling.
For every operable cell phone
that is donated at the Zoo, Eco-Cell will donate $15 back to the Zoo.
Another option for cell
phone recycling is to send your cell phone to Eco-Cell, which is a recycling
and environmental fundraising company. Send phones to 2701 Lindsay Ave.
Louisville, KY 40206. If you pool with other and have at least 10 phones,
Eco-Cell pays for shipping. For information, e-mail program@eco-cell.org.
When purchasing your new cell phone, remember to do the right
thing for the environment and your community. Recycling cell phones is
easy, convenient, and benefits worthy causes and organizations.
